The annual competition is open to all Nevada students up to grade 12 and provides young musicians the opportunity to showcase their talents in front of professional musicians. This year’s competition included a dozen student musicians from Las Vegas middle and high schools competing in piano, woodwinds, strings and brass. Of the 12 competitors, 4 students received honors by the panel of judges. Each student will receive $750 toward their music education, generously provided by Cox Communications of Las Vegas. Additionally, the students recognized will benefit from comprehensive mentoring by the Las Vegas Philharmonic Music Director, musicians and staff, designed to provide them with opportunities to continue developing their performance skills while gaining invaluable experience and exposure.
Over the next year, these students will be integrated into the Philharmonic’s community outreach programs and the newly launched Music Van initiative, which takes music enrichment and education out into the community to benefit children, families and seniors through a variety of programs. Honorees will also receive individual and group instruction from Music Director Donato Cabrera through master classes brought into their respective schools, allowing their fellow student musicians to share in some of the benefits of their achievement.
Cox’s support of The Las Vegas Philharmonic is part of the Company’s longstanding support of the arts – in particular, art education for youth – and is part of the Cox Hearts for Arts program. This is year four of a five-year pledge by Cox Communications of Las Vegas to support the program.
Rules, registration and repertoire for the 2019 competition will be available in January 2019.
